Legislator reaffirms commitment to supporting education

Tinderet Member of Parliament Julius Melly has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening education through sustained support for infrastructure development, bursaries, and scholarships to deserving learners.

The MP gave the assurance during a visit to St Mary’s Girls Secondary School, Tachasis, where he had an opportunity to address students during morning assembly. The school is among the best in the region.

He used the platform to congratulate the institution for its exemplary performance in the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations noting that more than 100 candidates attained the minimum university entry grade. Melly described the achievement as a major boost not only for the school but also for the entire constituency.

“Having over 100 students qualify for university is a remarkable achievement and a clear demonstration of academic discipline, dedication, and effective teaching,” he said, adding, “St Mary’s Girls Secondary School continues to stand out as a centre of excellence in Tinderet.”

The legislator attributed the strong performance to collective effort by learners, teachers, school management, and parents, adding that such results validate investments made in education over the years. He said education remains a cornerstone of his development agenda, noting that empowering young people through learning is key to unlocking long-term socio-economic progress in the constituency.

The legislator pledged to continue supporting infrastructure development at the school, saying improved facilities are essential for creating a conducive learning environment.

He pointed out that investments in classrooms, laboratories, dormitories, and other learning facilities directly impact academic outcomes and student welfare.

“Our responsibility as leaders is to ensure that students learn in an environment that supports their ambitions. I remain committed to supporting infrastructure development in this school and other institutions across the constituency,” he said.

The MP also reaffirmed his commitment to issuing bursaries and scholarships to needy but bright students, noting that financial hardship should not be a barrier to academic success. He encouraged students to take full advantage of available support programmes and urged parents and school administrators to work closely with his office to identify deserving beneficiaries.

“No child should be forced to drop out of school because of school fees. Through bursaries and scholarships, we will continue to support learners who show potential but face financial challenges,” Melly said.

He also congratulated Grade 10 students at the institution for successfully transitioning into senior secondary school under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system and urged them to remain focused and disciplined as they begin a critical phase of their academic journey.

“This is a defining stage in your education. What you do from now on will shape your future. Be disciplined, manage your time well, respect your teachers, and stay focused on your goals,” he advised them.

Melly cautioned students against negative peer influence and urged them to uphold moral values, hard work, and self-discipline, noting that academic excellence must go hand in hand with good character. He also encouraged them to explore their talents responsibly while keeping education as their top priority.

The MP’s visit forms part of his broader engagement with educational institutions across the Constituency, where he has consistently emphasised the importance of education as a tool for social transformation.

Over the years, schools in the constituency have benefited from government capitation, constituency development funds, and partnerships aimed at improving learning outcomes.

Teachers and students at the institution welcomed his visit, describing it as a morale booster, particularly following the school’s strong performance in the national examinations. The presence of the area MP during the morning assembly was seen as a gesture of encouragement and recognition of the school’s efforts in maintaining high academic standards.

The school has over the years established itself as one of the top-performing girls’ schools in the region, drawing students from different parts of the constituency and beyond. its consistentgood  performance in national examinations has been attributed to disciplined learning, dedicated teaching staff, and supportive leadership.

Education stakeholders in the area have increasingly called for closer collaboration between political leaders, school administrations, and parents to sustain and improve academic performance. Melly echoed this sentiment, urging all stakeholders to play their respective roles in nurturing learners and safeguarding the gains so far made.

“As leaders, parents, teachers, and students, we must work together. Education is a shared responsibility, and when we invest in our children, we invest in the future of our constituency and our nation,” he said.
