Meru County has set up elaborate plans to enhance food security and empower local farmers as Deputy Governor, Lindah Kiome Gitonga, joined residents of Ruiri Rwarera Ward in Buuri Sub-County for the official issuance of maize seedlings.
The event, held at a community gathering, was a testimony to the county’s commitment to agricultural development and food self-reliance.
The distribution of certified maize seedlings, along with coffee and hass avocado seedlings, was a key step in the county’s broader strategy to ensure that all 45 wards receive the necessary resources before the onset of the long rains.
The initiative, supported by the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, aims to boost crop yields and strengthen the county’s food production capabilities.
Governor Rev Mutuma M’Ethingia had earlier assured residents that the distribution of certified seeds would be a priority, emphasizing the importance of food security in the face of climate challenges and economic uncertainties.
“We are here to ensure that every farmer has access to quality seeds that will help them grow high yielding and resilient crops,” said Governor M’Ethingia during the recent Mashujaa Day celebration in Tigania East.
According to Kihome, the county has secured a total of 58,000 kg of certified maize seeds, coffee and hass avocado seedlings, valued at Sh70 million, out of which Sh50 million is allocated to purchase of certified seeds, while Sh20 million is reserved for seedlings.
The distribution is part of a larger program aimed at improving agricultural productivity, creating employment opportunities, and reducing dependency on food imports.
Residents of Ruiri Rwarera Ward, who attended the event, expressed their joy and gratitude for support from the county leadership.
“We are truly grateful for these certified seeds. We now have hope for a better harvest and a better life. Said Esther Karimi, a resident of Ruiri Rwarera.
The DG further emphasized the importance of community involvement in the success of the initiative. “This is not just a distribution of seeds, but a step towards building a food-secure future for all Meru residents,” she said.
The distribution of seedlings is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring a bumper harvest this season. With the support of the county government and the community, Meru is on track to achieve its goal of self-reliance in food production.
