Uber announces discounted rides for major tournaments

As Kenya prepares to host a series of major international sporting events in the coming weeks, including the HSBC SVNS and the Magical Kenya Open, Uber has unveiled a new rider promotion aimed at enhancing access to reliable and affordable transport during peak event periods.

The HSBC SVNS tournament is expected to draw thousands of local and international rugby fans to Nyayo National Stadium, leading to heightened movement along key routes connecting residential estates, hospitality venues and the stadium precinct. Large-scale sporting events of this scale often generate concentrated travel demand within specific time windows, making dependable mobility solutions essential to ensure fans arrive and depart safely and conveniently.

Similarly, the upcoming Magical Kenya Open is set to attract local spectators, international visitors, professional golfers and tournament officials. The event is expected to increase traffic along airport corridors, hotel zones, tournament venues and key tourism destinations within and around Nairobi.

As Kenya continues to position itself as a global sporting and tourism destination, seamless transport services remain central to shaping visitor experience and supporting the broader events ecosystem. Efficient movement of fans and visitors not only enhances convenience but also contributes to economic activity across hospitality, retail and entertainment sectors.

To help ease mobility pressures during these high-footfall weekends, Uber announced that it will roll out special in-app promotions targeting both new and existing riders. The initiative is designed to lower mobility barriers and support smoother transport experiences to and from event venues.

Imran Manji, General Manager and Head of East Africa at Uber, said Kenya continues to host world-class sporting and international events that bring together fans, visitors and local communities.

He noted that large-scale events such as HSBC SVNS inject vibrant energy into Nairobi while simultaneously creating unique mobility demands across the city.

“Our goal is to help fans get to and from the stadium reliably and affordably, while also supporting drivers to benefit from increased demand during major event weekends,” Manji said in a press statement.

The initiative forms part of Uber’s broader efforts to strengthen urban mobility during national and international events while creating additional earning opportunities for drivers during periods of elevated demand.

Under the new promotion, riders will receive 70 percent off their first five trips, with the discount capped at KES 400 per ride. The offer will be available across all Uber products and will run until the end of May, covering key sporting moments including the HSBC SVNS tournament and the Magical Kenya Open.

According to the company, new riders can access the promotion by entering the code KENYAy4e92i1 in the app. Existing riders attending HSBC SVNS have also received a dedicated event promotion through direct communication, offering discounted rides during the tournament period using the code RUGBY7SKE.

Fans are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, use designated pick-up and drop-off points and monitor the app for real-time updates during peak movement periods. Such measures are expected to help reduce congestion and streamline traffic flow around event venues.

As Nairobi and other cities continue hosting global sporting and tourism events, Uber reaffirmed its commitment to technology-enabled mobility solutions that support visitor convenience while driving inclusive economic participation for drivers and local businesses.
