Homa Bay County Commissioner, Ronald Mwiwawi, has challenged public servants to step up efforts in articulating government programs and policies.
Mwiwawi expressed concerns that the public is not enlightened adequately on projects and the progress the government is making in the economic transformation of the country.
He told public servants to ensure proper coordination and monitoring of government projects in order to give maximum value for on expenditure of public funds.
The administrator noted that there was need to build synergy among government departments and the two levels of government while implementing government policies and projects.
Mwiwawi made the remarks over the weekend during a two day but sensitization workshop for the county members of Government Delivery Unit in a Homa Bay hotel.
He said corruption was a major impediment to the realization of government objectives and called for concerted efforts to fight the vice.
“The culture of impunity in public service must be curtailed, we cannot continue taking government jobs casually where officials operate as they wish,” he asserted.
The CC also expressed concerns that there was excessive politicking and distortion of
what the government is doing especially through the social media.
“As implementers of government policies and projects we have a duty to communicate effectively on what the government is doing to uplift the lives of citizens and betterment of our country,” Mwiwawi said.
He emphasized that the government was keen on the realization of universal health coverage, food security, affordable housing and robust economic growth for job creation.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that the citizens get top notch services and that they appreciate the efforts the government was making to expand the economy,” Mwiwawi said.
Nyanza Regional Director for the Government Delivery Unit, Sylvance Osele, hailed the Hustler fund and National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) funds as a game changer in job creation.
Nyanza Regional Commissioner, Flora Mwora, noted that Homa Bay County was a leading beneficiary of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) projects especially in the infrastructure, blue economy and housing sectors.
She however expressed concerns over the low uptake of subsidized fertilizer in the county.
“It’s unfortunate that some farmers mistakenly believe that that the fertilizer ruins the soil texture, it is our duty to explain to them the importance of modern farming methods,” she said.
Ms Mworoa said that the rehabilitation of Homa Bay Pier and tarmacking of Rusinga island ring road will open up the blue economy in the county.
