The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education (KUPPET) officials in Homa Bay County have warned politicians to keep off their elections rescheduled for this Sunday.
The County Union Chairman, Jack Okoth, said it was regrettable that goons caused violence and disrupted their elections at Tom Mboya university on 11th January this year.
Some teachers were injured during the violence, leading to the exercise aborting.
The repeat of the election is scheduled for Sunday at Alaw Rachuonyo Hall in Kendu Bay Town, Rachuonyo North Sub-county.
Okoth who is defending his seat and his rivals Ben Obop and Silus Saka called for peaceful elections.
Okoth said their January election was scuttled due to interference by some local politicians.
He said the goons who caused violence in the election were allied to some political leaders in the county.
Speaking to the media Friday in Homa Bay Town, Okoth said it is wrong for politicians to interfere with their elections.
“Let politicians know that KUPPET is a professional organization. It has no relationship with national politics at all, hence they should not interfere with our elections,” Okoth said.
Obop urged political leaders to keep off the elections to prevent violence in the Sunday exercise. He urged teachers to elect leaders of integrity who can serve them well.
“Let teachers elect leaders who can fight for their rights,” said Obop.
Saka said security officials in the county had assured them of their safety during the elections. He urged teachers to come out in large numbers and vote.
“We urge security officials to be vigilant and guarantee peace. Let all teachers come out and vote leaders of their choice,” Saka said.
