Achani urges KISCOL to release idle land for rice farming

Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has urged the Kwale International Sugar Company Limited (KISCOL) to allow farmers from Ramisi to utilize idle land for rice cultivation.

The appeal follows the company’s decision to halt sugar milling operations, leaving large sections of its land unused.

Speaking during the launch of four tonnes of rice seeds in Bodo, Msambweni Sub-County yesterday, Achani said granting farmers access to the idle land would help boost food production and improve livelihoods.

“We are asking KISCOL to open the idle sections of its land to our farmers. These are hardworking people who depend on agriculture and giving them access will help improve food security and household incomes in this region,” said Achani.

She also called on residents to maintain peace and use the land strictly for farming if granted access.

“As you take up this opportunity, I urge you to coexist peacefully and strictly use the land for farming purposes only. Avoid putting up structures that may lead to disputes in the future,” she added.

The Governor’s remarks come amid concerns from residents of Bodo area who say the available land is insufficient to support their farming activities.

County officials present at the event included CECM for Social Services Francisca Kilonzo, Tourism CECM Michael Mutua, Chief Officer for Agriculture Joseph Jabu, Public Service official Mebakari Mwatabu, and Acting Diani Municipality Manager Hassan Mwayugwe, among others.

The county government has been promoting rice farming in the area as part of efforts to enhance food security and support local farmers.
