Ateker FC receives Sh1 million after lifting Busia Governor’s Cup

Ateker Football Club (FC) from Teso Central Sub-County were on Saturday crowned champions of the second edition of the Busia Governor’s Cup, walking away with Sh1 million and the coveted trophy.

Ateker sealed their victory after edging out Okimaru FC of Teso North 4–1 on penalties following a barren draw in regular time during the final played at Malaba Township Comprehensive School grounds.

The champions also received an additional Sh70,000, being part of the Sh1.5 million earlier donated by Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) interim party leader Dr Oburu Odinga towards boosting the tournament’s prize pool. The donation enabled teams that reached the quarterfinal stage to receive Sh70,000 each.

Okimaru FC, who put up a spirited performance, took home Sh570,000 as runners-up.

Ateker booked their place in the final after narrowly defeating Jobless FC from Matayos Sub-County 1–0 in the semifinals. In the other semifinal clash, Okimaru FC eliminated Marenga FC of Bunyala 4–3 on penalties after the match ended 1–1 in normal time.

Defending champions Ajax FC bowed out in the early stages of the tournament, paving the way for new winners.

In the ladies’ category, Mungatsi FC from Nambale were crowned champions after edging out defending champions Hakati Queens of Samia Sub-County 3–2 on penalties following a goalless draw in regular time. Mungatsi received Sh570,000, while Hakati Queens pocketed Sh270,000.

The award ceremony was graced by several leaders, among them Dr Oburu Odinga.

Busia Governor Paul Otuoma congratulated all participating teams for their spirited performances and for showcasing immense talent.

He directed the County Executive Committee Member for Sports, Olunga Ekwenye, to work towards ensuring Busia produces a team capable of competing in Kenya’s top-flight football league.
