Boda boda operators in Narok have strongly criticized the use of fellow riders to fuel violence and unrest as witnessed during Tuesday’s demonstrations in Nairobi, calling for discipline and accountability within the sector.
Speaking to Kenya News Agency in Narok, the riders condemned the infiltration of their sector by criminals who were seen pick-pocketing and looting shops during the protests.
Emmanuel Kip, a rider in the town, insisted that the boda boda industry is peace-loving and well-organized, and should not be tainted by the actions of a few rogue individuals.
“The sector is peaceful and well-organized,” said Kip, adding, “We question why some of our colleagues were involved in the chaos in Nairobi. We urge all riders to obey the law and act as role models to other members of the business community.”
Kip further called on boda boda leadership in Nairobi and other affected towns to identify and discipline those who took part in the destruction witnessed during the demonstrations.
His sentiments were echoed by Geoffrey Olora, another rider in Narok, who noted that criminal elements are increasingly hiding within the boda boda sector to perpetrate crime.
“Some criminals are using the good name of the boda boda sector to commit theft and terrorize innocent Kenyans,” said Olora.
“This must stop forthwith. We must weed out masqueraders in order to protect the integrity of our work,” he said.
The riders highlighted their commitment to upholding peace and assisting law enforcement efforts to eliminate wrongdoers, concealing themselves behind the sector’s identity.
