Business proprietors in Vihiga County have been encouraged to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in their premises and hire competent security guards to strengthen security and assist law enforcement agencies in tracking down criminals in the event of theft.
Speaking during a safety compliance meeting held over the weekend in Sabatia Sub-County, Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Festus Munyao emphasised that surveillance systems play a crucial role in crime prevention and investigations.
Munyao noted that in many theft incidents, business owners are often unable to provide useful details to police due to lack of evidence, which delays investigations and reduces the chances of recovering stolen property.
He cited a recent incident in Mbale town where thieves stole money from a business premises, but the owner could only report that the suspects were using a white vehicle — information he said was insufficient to help security officers identify the perpetrators.
The DCC explained that with properly installed CCTV cameras, authorities can easily obtain clear footage to identify suspects, trace their movements, and build stronger cases against them.
In addition, business owners were asked to hire sober and responsible watchmen and ensure they are equipped with the necessary tools required for their work, including protective gear, communication devices, and proper lighting equipment to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
He further urged entrepreneurs to prioritise security measures, including adequate lighting and alarm systems alongside CCTV installation, to protect their businesses, employees, and customers.
The meeting brought together business owners and government officials to discuss compliance with safety regulations and measures aimed at improving security within trading centres across the sub-county.
