Uasin Gishu Governor’s spouse, Mama Salina Bii, has made a passionate appeal to business establishments to install breastfeeding closets, offering safe and private spaces for nursing mothers.
Speaking during the commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week at Mama Rachel Ruto Maternity Hospital, Mama Bii reaffirmed her continued support for efforts that promote the health and well-being of mothers and children, particularly in public and professional spaces.
During the occasion, Mama Bii also officially unveiled a newly installed breastfeeding cabin at Rupa Mall in Eldoret Town. She hailed the initiative, describing it as a significant step towards supporting mothers and enhancing children’s health and immunity, especially in working environments.
“When mothers are supported to breastfeed, we empower the next generation with strong immunity and a healthy start to life,” she said. “Businesses must step up and be part of this transformation,”.
Preventive and Promotive Health Chief Officer Dr. Paul Wangwe noted that the County is actively implementing plans to establish breastfeeding spaces in all Sub-county hospitals and major markets.
“Our goal is to improve access and ensure that mothers can breastfeed comfortably wherever they are. Since we opened the Uasin Gishu County Hospital breastfeeding space, over 400 staff members have benefited,” Dr. Wangwe stated.
City Manager Elzeba Busienei welcomed the growing movement of safe breastfeeding space, saying the initiative reflects the County’s respect for women and children.
“This is about dignity. It shows we value our women and recognize the critical role they play in nurturing future generations and leaders in different fields,” she said.
“The initiative underscores Uasin Gishu county’s commitment in setting the pace in promoting maternal and child health, ‘one booth at a time,’ she added.
