There is a need to include Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in youth-led programmes and public activities in the community, the United Disabled Persons of Kenya (ADPK) Programme Officer, Joy Mugure has said.
Mugure said this in a hotel in Wote town on Tuesday where she noted that the involvement of the PWDs will bring about inclusivity and participation in various issues in the society.
She said this while training the members of the Makueni Youth Network (MYN) where they were equipped with knowledge and tools to help them advocate for the PWDs in the county.
“Disability inclusion requires action and collaboration in society. We want young people to understand disability is not just from a charity point of view, but through a human rights perspective,” said Mugure.
During the training, the Programme Officer said that they expect to raise a group committed to championing disability issues in Makueni County.
MYN is involved in empowering youths through leadership and entrepreneurship and civic engagement in the county.
Also, UDPK supports PWDs with life skills, entrepreneurship training, and links them to employment opportunities in an effort to make them self-reliant.
