Kenyans have been urged to embrace tree growing and environmental conservation as part of national efforts to restore degraded ecosystems and build a climate-resilient future.
Speaking at Ngong Township Comprehensive School in Kajiado County, where he presided over the planting of trees to mark Mazingira Day, Principal Secretary (PS) for Irrigation, Ephantus Kimotho, said every citizen has a role to play in protecting the environment and supporting national reforestation efforts.
The PS noted that Kenya’s environmental future depends on collective action, emphasising the need for individuals, schools, and other institutions to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to increasing tree cover across the country.
“Tree planting is not just a development goal; it is a patriotic duty that calls on all Kenyans to take action in preserving our environment for future generations,” said Kimotho.
This year’s Mazingira Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Citizen-centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship’, bringing together government officials, students, and community groups to promote tree planting, climate action, and environmental restoration.
Kimotho underscored the importance of integrating environmental education into learning institutions to nurture a culture of conservation among young people.
He further noted that sustainable production and value addition initiatives are key to promoting climate-smart livelihoods and supporting Kenya’s green growth agenda.
“We must empower our young people with the knowledge and values to become responsible stewards of nature. Investing in value addition and sustainable production will help communities build resilience while protecting the environment,” he said.
During the event, various groups joined in planting fruit and indigenous trees, highlighting the link between biodiversity, food security, and environmental sustainability.
The celebrations also featured a clean-up and tree planting exercise at the Ngong Bus Park, where residents, local leaders, and environmental champions came together to promote urban greening and community ownership of public spaces.
The PS lauded community groups and individuals recognised as Climate and Environment Champions for their outstanding contribution to conservation efforts, reiterating the government’s commitment to increasing Kenya’s tree cover to 30 percent by 2032.
Mazingira Day, observed annually on October 10, seeks to raise awareness on environmental protection, reforestation, and sustainable resource management in line with the country’s Climate Action Agenda.
