Coastal activists condemn propaganda against KPA MD

Activists from Kenya’s Coast region have condemned what they describe as propaganda targeting Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto.

Speaking in Mombasa, the group, led by Mombasa Women Leaders chairperson and presidential coordinator Mildred Odinga, the activists alleged that the misinformation was being spread by politicians and stakeholders driven by tribalism and corruption, aimed at removing Capt. Ruto for personal gain.

They further alleged that the false information being spread was a result of managed corruption within the institution since Ruto’s tenure started.

The activists therefore urged President William Ruto to retain the MD, citing his reforms and achievements since taking office.

Odinga praised Capt. Ruto for being a “game changer” in employment and inclusivity, noting his support for women’s groups in Mombasa.

The activists also highlighted his role in involving the middle class in port operations and overseeing the handling of a record 2 million containers in 2024, a first for the organisation.

Odinga has also called out corrupt officials for their actions, highlighting that the MD has served as a game changer in matters of employment hence he has proved to be a reliable leader.

“As a woman leader, I stand with Captain Ruto as he is working effortlessly to uplift the Mombasa Women Groups within the institution hence, we will work to ensure Captain Ruto leads for another term,” she said.

“We refuse to be led by corrupt tycoons and government officials so we are beseeching the President to extend Captain Ruto’s time at the port in order to curb the issue of tribalism and biases within the country,” said one Juma Mwanzuga.

“We are seeking his contract renewal for many reasons including his outstanding performance as KPA’s MD hence we stand firm to protect Captain Ruto,” noted Michael Nato of Cardinal Youth Association.

The coastal leaders noted that Capt. Ruto has proven himself as an astute leader and called on politicians to put a halt to tribalism, especially within the county, noting that every citizen has the freedom to work across the country.
