County Commissioner Leads Madaraka Day with Tough Message on Illegal Brews

Tharaka Nithi County joined the rest of the country in marking Kenya’s 62nd Madaraka Day with celebrations held at Kibugua Grounds, where residents turned out in large numbers to commemorate the historic day.

The event was presided over by County Commissioner David Gitonga, who emphasized the need for the community to remain vigilant against social vices such as illicit brews, alcoholism and their overconsumption.

Gitonga called on members of the public to support government efforts to eradicate illicit brews, urging them to use the toll-free Mulika Uhalifu code 988 to report all illegal activities.

“Illicit brews continue to ruin many lives. We must work together to eliminate this vice by reporting offenders through the 988 platform,” said the Commissioner.

He also decried increasing cases of tribalism in schools, where teachers from other regions face resistance from local communities.

“It is unacceptable for schools to reject teachers based on their origin or religious affiliation. A teacher’s duty is to educate, not to align with tribal or church boundaries. This behavior must stop,” Gitonga added.

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, who also addressed the gathering, outlined various development plans with a focus on healthcare improvement and infrastructural development.

The Governor announced that Kibugua Grounds will be temporarily closed for six months to allow for renovations.

The proposed upgrades include construction of a modern stage, erection of a perimeter fence, cabro paving for the parking area, and establishment of a standard football pitch.

Njuki further revealed plans to upgrade Magutuni Hospital and Mpukoni Health Centre to Level 4 facilities and to set up a central Level 4 hospital in Maara Sub-County.

He said outpatient services will also be expanded in sub-county hospitals to enhance service delivery.
