The Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, has urged residents of Kenya’s Central region to recognise and embrace the government’s development gains.
Speaking in Makuyu, Murang’a County, on Thursday while laying the foundation stone for the Jitume ICT hub, Kabogo highlighted that the Kenya Kwanza administration has recorded significant achievements within its first three years in office.
The CS cited key initiatives, including the tarmacking of roads, implementation of affordable housing programmes, and the establishment of digital hubs across the country, aimed at improving livelihoods and promoting inclusive development.
He called on local leaders to provide factual information to the public and avoid narratives that could mislead residents and undermine the government’s development efforts.
Kabogo said the Jitume ICT hub is part of a nationwide programme to establish digital hubs in every ward, designed to enhance digital inclusion, create opportunities for youth, and empower communities to participate fully in the digital economy.
“The government is committed to ensuring that no region is left behind in the digital transformation agenda. These hubs will provide internet access, support online work, and promote delivery of various digital services at the grassroots level,” he said.
He added that the administration will continue expanding internet connectivity in rural areas to bridge the digital divide and provide spaces for innovation, online jobs, training, and access to government e-services.
The CS also asked Kenyans to acknowledge the economic recovery achieved under the current regime, noting a gradual decline in the cost of living. He highlighted a stable dollar exchange rate and reduced fuel prices as evidence of improved economic management, urging citizens to safeguard these gains through unity and support for government programmes.
During the event, Kabogo officially launched new offices for the chief of Makuyu location, which he said would enhance service delivery and improve coordination of government activities at the local level.
Maragua Member of Parliament Mary Wamaua, who hosted the event, welcomed the projects, noting that the new chief’s office would bring services closer to the people and improve administrative efficiency. She further urged the national government to ensure digital hubs are fully equipped to enable effective service delivery, empowering youth and supporting local economic growth.
Local leaders and residents attending the function expressed optimism that the projects would spur development in the area, create employment opportunities, and improve access to government services.
The Makuyu ICT hub is expected to be completed within the next few months, joining other similar facilities being established across the country as part of the government’s digital transformation agenda.
