CS Wandayi puts electricity infrastructure vandals on notice

Energy and Petroleum CS Opiyo Wandayi has issued a stern warning against the vandalism of electricity infrastructure.

Speaking in Likoni constituency, when he launched a rural electrification project in Mphwakani, Shikaadabu Ward, being implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation, Wandayi warned that vandals of electricity infrastructures will face the full force of the law.

He urged Mphwakani residents to safeguard electricity installations and report vandals to authorities for immediate action.

“As a ministry, we will work closely with security agencies to apprehend vandals and ensure they are prosecuted and jailed to serve as a deterrent to others,” said the CS, emphasizing that electricity projects are capital-intensive and must be protected at all costs.

Wandayi further stated that the broad-based government is focused on ensuring fair distribution of development projects across the country.

The CS reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equitable distribution of development projects across the country, noting that Mombasa and its constituencies have long been marginalized in terms of development since independence, with some areas still lacking electricity.

“We must thank the President for initiating rural electrification projects; without his support, this area would not have access to electricity,” he added.

Wandayi further highlighted that electricity is crucial for daily life and will unlock investment opportunities, boosting local economic growth. “This project will enable residents of Shikaadabu and Likoni to expand businesses and improve their livelihoods,” he said.

The CS also lauded the cordial working relationship between ODM and Kenya Kwanza legislators, and he termed the new working arrangement as key to fostering unity and peace in the country.

The inaugural joint ODM-Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group Meeting was the first step in fostering unity ahead of the 2027 general election.

“Mombasa has been a bastion of Raila Odinga and William Ruto; the working relationship will cement the duo’s foothold in the port city,” said CS Wandayi.

Area MP Mishi Mboko thanked the government for initiating the project, as it will enable the newly built Mishi Mboko Girls’ Secondary School to establish a boarding section.

She urged the CS to consider Shonda-Maweni, Dongo Kundu, Pungu Villa, Kwa Muhindi, Kibakani and Vyemani to also have electricity.

“We appreciate the Broad-Based Government. I am from a Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zone investors meeting. 15 investors are ready to go. This will create employment for our youth,” said the MP.

The legislator also praised the government for agreeing to construct an ICT and Resource Centre in Timbwani Ward.

“We have already proposed the construction of a Huduma Centre in Shikaadabu to enhance service delivery,” she said.
