The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to introduce a mobile voter registration exercise alongside its ongoing physical outreach program in an effort to boost the number of registered voters ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which kicked off on September 29 across all constituencies, has so far recorded a low turnout.
To address this, the Commission plans to deploy mobile registration teams and leverage digital platforms to engage the youth and enhance participation.
Nyando Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Elijah Maranga has urged residents, particularly young people who have recently turned 18, to take advantage of the initiative and register as voters in large numbers.
“The ongoing voter registration exercise is being conducted at the IEBC offices in Awasi, and plans are underway to roll out mobile registration across Nyando Constituency,” Maranga assured.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ogwedhi PAG Comprehensive School in Kochogo Village, Awasi/Onjiko Ward, Maranga explained that the mobile registration drive aims to reach residents in remote areas who may face challenges accessing IEBC offices. He also reminded the public that the government is issuing national identity cards free of charge to new applicants aged 18 and above. “Application for a new ID is free for youth turning 18 years. Only those replacing lost IDs are required to pay Sh.1,050,” he clarified.
He further encouraged school leavers to ensure they apply for IDs and voter registration to access government services and contribute to national development.
“Without an ID, one’s access to economic opportunities and government services becomes very limited,” Maranga cautioned.
