DP calls for tolerance to the newly appointed IEBC

Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has called for tolerance to the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners.

Kindiki, who spoke at Gokeharaka, Kuria East Sub County, in an empowerment forum for local women groups and small-scale traders, assured the public that there was nothing to worry about in the forthcoming elections, as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has already been commissioned.

The swearing-in ceremony of the six IEBC commissioners and the chairperson, Erastus Edung Ethekon, on Friday, July 11, by Chief Justice Martha Koome paved the way for the seven to formally assume their roles at the Electoral Commission’s offices at the Anniversary Towers building in Nairobi.

The swearing-in ceremony came after President William Ruto formally gazetted the appointments to regularise the process following a recent High Court ruling.

On issues of development, the Deputy President said that the government has prioritised the reviving and completion of stalled road projects countrywide, as well as initiating the construction of new projects to stimulate economic transformation from the grassroots.

He pointed out that the government will fast-track the construction of the 78 km Taranganya-Ntimaro-Nyamtiro and One Stop Border Post in Kegonga Kuria to empower the Migori people economically.

He also disclosed that the Kugitimo Loliondo B1 road will be done at a cost of Sh 3.5 billion, adding that once completed and operational, the road will spur trading activities in Migori County, neighbouring counties, as well as the East African Community.

Kindiki also revealed that the government will connect an additional 17,000 households in Migori County to the national grid, allocating Sh1.6 billion in the ongoing nationwide last-mile electricity connectivity programme. Specifically, Sh311 million will be spent on electricity connections for 4,000 new households in Kuria East Constituency.

He noted that he was pleased to participate in the Kuria East Constituency Economic Empowerment Programme to boost micro and small enterprises established by women through their SACCOs to steer the Bottom-Up Transformation Economic Agenda.

Migori Governor Dr Ochilo Ayacko applauded the visit, saying that the Economic Empowerment Programme underscored the shared commitment to uplifting women, youths and people with disability (PWD) through economic empowerment and community development to promote inclusive growth across the country.

Kuria East Member of Parliament (MP) Kitayama Maisori thanked President Dr William Ruto, the Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, and both the national and county political class for the empowerment drive aimed at uplifting the economic standards of Kuria women and youths.

Kitayama explained that the Kuria region will continue to support the government agenda to ensure that economic transformation is achieved at the grassroots level.

In attendance were the Principal Secretary for Social Protection, Joseph Motari; Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot; National Assembly Majority Whip Silvanus Osoro, among other Migori County leaders.
