The elderly in Igembe South have called on the public to reduce loud noise in Maua town saying it disrupts their daily lives and affects their health.
The concerns came as seniors were collecting their cash transfer money at various M-Pesa points in Maua town where loud music and advertisements made it difficult for them to complete their transactions.
Contacted Dr Festus Mungathia an ENT specialist at Nyambene Level Four Hospital, who explained that as people age, hearing naturally deteriorates making them more sensitive to loud sounds.
‘’Noise pollution can become a serious hindrance to hearing among seniors and prolonged exposure to it may accelerate hearing loss and affect overall wellbeing,’’ said Dr Mungathia.
He urged the youths in bodaboda sector to lower the volume of music and reduce loud hooting in public spaces especially around M-Pesa points and hospitals.
The ENT specialist added that noise can accelerate hearing impairment and contribute to stress-related illnesses, affecting the overall quality of life for the elderly.
The senior citizens lamented that constant noise can also lead to stress and fatigue making it harder for them to enjoy and conduct their daily activities with ease.
“We are old and need peace. We acknowledge young people enjoy music and loud noise but they should be mindful of how it affects us,’’ said 85-year-old Florence Mukethi.
