Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki has called on the Kenyan youth to engage the government constructively to enhance a stabilised country.
Speaking while he met about 1500 youth drawn from Tharaka Nithi and Meru Counties, the Deputy President told the youth that they have a greater stake in a stable Kenya than the older people, some of whom he accused of working towards destabilisation of the Country.
“You are the people with a greater interest in a peaceful, prosperous, and economically inclusive state than the older people.”
Naturally, you have a longer time on earth than the older people, some of whom want to destroy the Country. Someone is already 70 years old and has very few years left but he is the one trying to destroy Kenya, causing civil wars. They want to see them in the bush killing each other instead of building the nation,” said Professor Kindiki.
He said Kenyan youth must insist on how they want the country run because some of the people who want to destabilise Kenya have the means to run away in case of civil unrest.
“If the country broke into pieces, they have a way to evacuate their families and leave millions of Kenyans suffering.”
“I plead with you to demand accountability and action be taken against corrupt leaders and question the enforcement of law and order in a manner that does not injure the rights and liberties of people who are unarmed and are not violent,” said Professor Kindiki.
But as we do all these, he added, we must not use that chance to burn down the country because if you do, there will be no country to take care of.
“I say this with a lot of emotions because I have seen in the last few weeks an otherwise important conversation about governance and the fight against corruption being misused to destroy the peace and stability of our country,” said Professor Kindiki.
