Andiwo Obondo Foundation has donated soccer kits worth Sh. 300,000 to twenty-two comprehensive schools in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County, to support the nurturing of sports talents in schools.
Speaking during the donation of the uniforms at Gobei comprehensive school, the Foundation Director Thomas Andiwo disclosed that so far 60 schools and 25 community clubs in the region have benefitted from the initiative.
Mr Andiwo said that besides other initiatives like bursaries, bicycle programmes for schools and environmental conservation, the foundation engages in supporting the nurturing of talents, which is an integral part of the government’s Competency-Based Education (CBE).
He observed that the provision of sporting kits to both schools and community clubs goes a long way in not only making the students take sports seriously but also giving them the confidence to do better and succeed in sports.
Andiwo stated that as a foundation, they have limited resources to meet the high demand of the schools and community clubs and therefore the government needs to invest more in supporting the nurturing of talents.
He called upon other foundations and well-wishers to join hands and to support schools in acquiring kits which are unaffordable to many schools in the region.
Gobei Comprehensive School Principal Mr Otai Joseph thanked the foundation for the donation of soccer kits, saying the school had to borrow kits when playing other schools, which dented the confidence of his students.
He stated that with the current CBE system, schools need a lot of support in areas like music, art, dance and sports to fully realise the potential of the students .
The school’s B.O.M. Chair Francis Ooko Oloo thanked Andiwo Obondo Foundation for the donation and asked leaders from the region to emulate the same for the future of students.
