Construction of modern student hostels at Githunguri Technical and Vocational College (TVC) in Mariigi is progressing steadily, with foundation works now approaching completion.
The project, which began after the official groundbreaking a month ago is transforming the institution that has had no hostels dedicated to trainees.
The development involves 590 hostel units designed to accommodate two students each, providing a total capacity of 1,180 beds.
Funded by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing through the State Department of Urban Development under the Affordable Housing Programme, the hostels aim to ease accommodation challenges for trainees and create a more conducive learning environment for them.
Emphasising ownership and accountability, the area MP Gathoni Wamuchomba said the hostels are not for sale and will remain an asset of the college.
Wamuchomba reaffirmed her support for the national government’s development agenda.
“I will continue to support President William Ruto and his administration to deliver his promises to the people of Githunguri,” she said.
Site visits reveal significant progress on the ground. Heavy machinery has been deployed for extensive earthworks which are now at an advanced stage. The rapid advancement of these critical early phases raises hopes that the hostels will be ready for occupation in the near future.
The new facilities are expected to significantly boost enrolment at Githunguri TVC, which offers various technical courses, particularly in building and construction-related fields.
Students have been relying on private rental accommodation in the surrounding areas, often at high costs and with limited security.
The modern hostel complex will provide safe, affordable, and convenient accommodation, allowing learners to focus fully on their studies.
As heavy groundwork gives way to superstructure in the coming weeks, Githunguri residents remain optimistic that this flagship project will position their TVC as a model institution in Kiambu County and beyond. Stakeholders, including college management and parents, have welcomed the visible progress.
Once completed, the hostels will form part of a broader push to strengthen Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country by integrating student housing solutions.
