Over nine thousand residents of Siaya County turned-up for a multi-agency medical and government service outreach camp, courtesy of Medical Services Principal Secretary, Dr. Ouma Oluga, in collaboration with leading national referral hospitals, universities, and local partners.
According to Dr Oluga the huge turnout of the one-day camp held at Chianda Primary School compound in Rarieda Sub-county, is a reflection of the community’s strong need for both healthcare and decentralized government services.
The Principal Secretary disclosed that among those who attended the camp, over 6,000 people sought medical attention, while 2,000 residents accessed critical public services which included birth certificate and ID registration, certificates of good conduct, marriage registration, and legal aid.
“From as early as 7 am, the turnout was overwhelming, a powerful indication that citizens value government that meets them where they are,” remarked Dr Oluga.
Registration for birth certificates and IDs, experienced long queues, prompting the call to extend the services by a day.
Those who turned up for medical camp benefitted from free screening, diagnosis, and treatment for a wide range of conditions, including cancer and non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and rheumatic heart disease, which remain prevalent in the region.
“We had patients screened for cervical, breast and prostate cancers supported by X-ray and Ultra sound diagnostics. Patients were also screened and sensitized on non-communicable disease like diabetes and hypertension, besides the offering of assessment and early detection of chronic organ related diseases,” the PS revealed.
Other free services provided at the Camp were rapid tests for infectious diseases like malaria, TB, HIV, H-pylori and pneumonia as well as specialized services including eye surgeries, dental procedures, and mental health assessments which many residents are unable to access because of high costs.
The mega camp also saw more than 800 fishermen participate in special sessions led by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on managing explosives, identifying counterfeit currency, and promoting safety on Lake Victoria.
Dr Oluga lauded President William Ruto for sponsoring 12 million Persons Living with severe Disability(PWDs), under Social Health Authority (SHA), saying the President’s move to recognize and support PWDs is a strong statement that the government is committed to ensuring the Medical Scheme benefits everyone in the country.
The occasion which was graced by Attorney General, Dorcas Oduor and area Member of Parliament (MP), Dr Otiende Amollo, saw thirteen wheelchairs donated to persons with severe mobility challenges.
