The government is embarking on promoting use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in learning institutions.
Speaking at Isiolo girls’ high school, the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, while launching an LPG plant at the institution, said the learning institution was among the 20 pilot projects in the country before extending to other government establishments.
Mr. Wandayi said that the first beneficiary of the project was Jamhuri High School in Nairobi, which was officiated by the President, Dr. William Ruto.
He said the programme would be rolled out to other institutions once the 20 pilot schools successfully embarked on the use of the gas as a source of energy.
“Connecting gas to institutions will improve efficiency of cooking, health and cleanliness of the kitchen staff as well as conserve the environment since logging of trees for firewood and charcoal will be alleviated,’ the CS said.
He added that his Ministry had this financial year invested Sh. 1.3 billion for Isiolo County alone to extend electricity to villages and households.
Mr. Wandayi noted that with the electricity supply in the villages, the residents would establish light ‘Jua Kali’ industries that can spur the economic growth of the area.
He further said the government was emphasizing the need for the distribution of resources across the country so that all areas are involved and none is left behind in development.
He said all leaders in the country should endeavor to preach peace and avoid planting seeds of discord among citizens, adding that the politicians must fight tribalism and stop engaging in politics at the expense of the development agenda.
The CS was accompanied by Petroleum Principal Secretary Mohamed Liban and Isiolo County Commissioner Geoffrey Omoding, among other dignitaries.
