Nyamira County Commissioner Shufaa Omar has put defilement perpetrators on notice, warning that the government will pursue them to face the law.
Commissioner Omar issued the warning on Friday while presiding over the Jamuhuri Day Celebrations at Mwongori Polytechnic grounds terming the current trend as worrying where the number of defilement cases has reached the alarming stage.
“Our county has already recorded a whopping 10 defilement cases in the past one month alone. This is abnormally high and obviously indicates that our daughters are highly endangered and we cannot just be reporting for the sake of it. Serious action must be taken to protect our girls and pursue justice for these torturous crimes against them,” she said.
“Our men have become beasts, they are preying on minors knowing very well they are vulnerable and do not have the ability to give consent to sex or any other form of sexual abuse. Most of these men are married, have daughters and are expected to be advocates of child protection rights but have instead turned out to be proponents of abuse,” Ms Omar remarked.
She wondered why such men cannot approach fellow adult women and ask them for friendship, a hand in marriage or just sexual enjoyment but instead take advantage of this vulnerable lot.
“Business in this county will no longer be as usual, in collaboration with my security team and other stakeholders, we will ensure defilement perpetrators are brought to book. Kangaroo courts will not be condoned and we shall ensure those matters are expedited once brought before the courts so that the defiled minors access justice,” the CC stated.
“Be bold enough to report any form of abuse on children and any other crime to relevant authorities so that they are intercepted early enough to cushion our vulnerable population against more of such life-threatening incidents,” Omar advised.
She urged parents to be keen and know the whereabouts of their children all the time because apart from defilement there could be several other dangers that children are bound to encounter and therefore need immediate intervention by responsible adults.
Commissioner Omar clarified that though new in Nyamira County, she is not new in service. She confirmed that she has vast experience which spans over 30 years and she is therefore more than ready to deliver service to the citizens of Nyamira to ensure they are safe and their property, business and various investments are well secured.
She appealed for cooperation and collaboration from everyone so that their expectations are met and together they transform Nyamira County and take it to greater heights.
