Government reviews progress of infrastructure projects in Kisii County

The national government has recorded notable progress in the construction of the Kisii Cancer Centre following the resolution of earlier challenges that had slowed down works, a government official has said.

Speaking during routine inspections of ongoing national government projects in Kisii County, Government Delivery Unit representative Melchy Ochengo Onduso said construction at the cancer centre had progressed significantly well over the last month.

“We are here with a team from the Nyanza region and Kisii County from the national government. This is the Kisii Cancer Centre where the main works are ongoing,” Onduso said while addressing the media at the construction site located on the outskirts of Kisii town.

He noted that the project, which is being implemented under an 18-month contract, is scheduled for completion early next year, although minor delays had been experienced earlier. However, he said the challenges had since been sorted.

Onduso revealed that the project’s completion rate had increased from 15 per cent in October to the current 31 per cent, attributing the progress to improved coordination and contractor performance.

The Kisii Cancer Centre is expected to be a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance cancer treatment services and serve patients from Kisii County and other parts of the country.

The main construction contract is valued at Sh1.2 billion, while the entire project, including mechanical and electrical installations as well as equipping, will cost approximately Sh4 billion.

As part of the routine inspection, the team also reviewed progress on other key national government projects in the county including the Nyanchwa Affordable Housing Project, which is currently 25 per cent complete.

The inspection team is also visited the Itumbe–Motonto Road project, covering the Riyakemoni–Igare section towards Nyacheki, a 36-kilometre road being constructed at a cost of Sh1.6 billion.

Further visits were made to Kitutu Chache North and Kitutu Chache South, where a 64-kilometre road project funded by the national government is ongoing and has reached 53 per cent completion.

Onduso said the routine checks were aimed at assessing progress, resolving bottlenecks, and ensuring timely completion of strategic projects intended to improve healthcare, housing, and road infrastructure in Kisii.
