Government to absorb all unemployed teachers, KNUT discloses

All teachers who have been waiting for many years to secure government employment will be absorbed under an affirmative action agreement between the KNUT and the government.

The assurance was given by Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Collins Oyuu while speaking at the women and youth empowerment fundraiser in North Kanyamkago Ward-Uriri Sub-County on Monday.

Oyuu said President William Ruto had committed to employing all teachers who have stayed out of government employment for long, noting that the process would be undertaken in due course.

Oyuu described it as unfortunate that some teachers have reached the age of 45 without being employed by the government and stated that KNUT would ensure that such teachers benefit from the affirmative action currently being implemented.

The implementation of affirmative action by the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) seeks to rectify historical imbalances in the teaching profession by promoting inclusivity to create a more equitable education system that reflects the diversity of the population.

The implementation of affirmative action will also ensure fair representation and equal opportunities for teachers from marginalised and underprivileged backgrounds.

He further revealed that the government has also agreed to promote more teachers who have stagnated in the same job group for years.

According to him, President William Ruto approved an increase in the allocation for teachers’ promotions from Sh1billion to Sh2.2 billion to allow more teachers to be promoted next year.

The KNUT SG also commended the Kenya Kwanza administration for employing the highest number of teachers within just three years.

He noted that the union was pleased that the government had hired 76,000 teachers so far, with an additional 20,000 expected to be employed in January 2026.
