Government to fight drug abuse in Kiambu

The government has reiterated its commitment to eradicating alcohol and drug abuse in Kiambu County.

Kiambu County Commissioner Henry Wafula called for more cooperation from the county administration to enable the government to win the war against the vice.

He further directed the Kenya National Police Service and all the national government administrative officers to ensure substance abuse is eradicated in the region.

NACADA central region manager Amos Warui said the agency will continue supporting the county government and security agents in monitoring and evaluating the county on issues of drug and alcohol abuse.

He noted that bringing in more relevant bodies such as the Liquor licensing board and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) in the fight would be a great step in addressing the control and flow of drugs and illicit alcohol in the county.

NACADA recently introduced an arrangement where law enforcement and the justice system will be partners in the rehabilitation of drug users and not just instruments of punishment for the offenders.

NACADA is now calling for a non-violent approach to low-level drug offenders, where they are suggesting that they be punished by being given communal service jobs.

According to the KNBS Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2022, 35.6 percent of people in Kiambu County consume alcohol.
