The government will spend over Sh6 billion to construct hostels in three institutions to accommodate students in Makueni County, Deputy President (DP) Professor Kithure Kindiki has said.
Prof. Kindiki said that the government will construct hostels with 1,500 rooms at Wote Training Technical Institute (WTTI) and a similar number at Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC)- Wote Campus and spend Sh3 billion each and another 300 units at Kwa Kathoka Agricultural Training College (ATC) at a cost of Sh300 million respectively.
He said this on Saturday at Police Sports Ground in Wote town where he was a guest during a fundraising event for women and youths groups with a view to empower them economically and uplift their lives.
“The government will construct hostels to ensure students have good habitable place and learn without any problem,” said Prof. Kindiki while addressing the various women and youths who graced the occasion.
Though the DP did not indicate when the construction will start, he said other medical colleges and Technical Vocational and Education Training will also benefit from the government programme that is being implemented across the country.
During the event, Prof. Kindiki disclosed that 70 youths from every ward in the country doing Micro- small business will get Sh50,000 through the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) Project to expand their businesses.
“We have started a programme for small businesses at the grassroot doing carpentry, welding, kinyozi and electrical shops. They will receive each Sh50,000 to expand the businesses they are doing,” posed the DP.
On agriculture, Prof. Kindiki said the government will support farmers growing pulses like cowpeas and green grams among others to ensure they reap maximum profits in an effort to improve their lives.
He discouraged youths from idling in market centres and instead encouraged them to take advantage of the many programmes of government to enable them fend for themselves hence avoid being misused by politicians.
Consequently, Kindiki informed the youths to apply online and be recruited into the Workx Climate (formerly Kazi Mtaani) saying the government will recruit 110,000 to clean rivers and unclog drainage across the country.
Speaking at the same event, Kibwezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Mwengi Mutuse thanked the government for factoring in Sh2 billion in the budget for the ongoing construction of Thwake Dam and also money to tarmac Emali-Ukia Road.
