Government urged to firmly enforce Cybercrimes law

The Government has been urged to fully and firmly enforce the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes law, to rein in culprits who target women through online harassment.

Speaking to the Press after marking 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Matungu, Tuesday, the Director of Network for Research and Governance (NRG), Paul Odongo, urged youth and women, to exercise caution and make responsible use of the digital space.

“Given the country has opened UP the digital space, there are great risks involved, but again there are very many opportunities that one can benefit from,” Odongo said.

He said some perverted individuals have leveraged the opened digital space to prey on unsuspecting vulnerable women and exploit them by luring them online, using digital tools like dating apps and social media platforms.

Odongo was speaking on the sidelines of a training programme, initiated by a non-governmental organization, Haki Ni Yetu in partnership with Inform Action, that seeks to ensure women and the youth understand how to use the digital space responsibly.

The Director of Matungu Social Justice Centre, Anastacia Munyengo, called for legal action against the perpetrators of cybercrimes.
