Government vows to protect people and property in Meru

The Meru County Commissioner (CC), Jacob Ouma, has affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

Speaking during a two-day Peoples Dialogue Festival at the Meru National Polytechnic, Ouma criticized the recent looting and destruction witnessed in the region, noting that the primary mandate of security agencies is to safeguard people and ensure law and order is maintained at all times.

The CC emphasized that while peaceful protests are allowed under the law, the government will not allow criminals to take advantage of the demonstrations to steal from hardworking Kenyans.

“We cannot stand by and watch as looters hide behind Gen Z protests to steal property and destroy businesses. That will no longer be tolerated,” he vowed.

His remarks come in the wake of the recent torching of one of the Supermarkets in Makutano, Meru County, during Saba Saba unrest.

Ouma said that they have already launched investigations to bring the culprits to book.

”Those found culpable will be liable for their own heinous acts of vandalism. There will be no sacred cows, the law breakers will be accountable for their deeds,” he said.

The CC further assured residents that the government was on high alert, and that those found engaging in criminal acts under the guise of protests will be dealt with firmly and in accordance with the law.
