Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has announced the rollout of a Sh60 million Social Protection grant aimed at supporting vulnerable groups across the county.
Speaking in Malava Sub-County, the governor stated that the funds will be disbursed in July 2025 and will target women, youth, and persons with disabilities engaged in income-generating activities.
He said the ambitious initiative will benefit 1,200 registered groups, 20 groups per ward across all 60 wards in the region.
The Governor said each group is set to receive Sh 50,000 to boost their livelihood efforts and enhance economic self-reliance at the grassroots.
“In July this year, my administration will release Sh 60 million under the Social Protection Grants Programme. This will go directly to organised, registered groups working to uplift their livelihoods,” Governor Barasa said.
He emphasised that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader agenda of promoting inclusive development and reducing poverty in the county.
The funds are expected to support small-scale businesses, agricultural ventures, and other community-based projects that empower marginalized populations.
Barasa called on local leaders and ward administrators to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection of beneficiary groups.
He also urged community members to form and register viable groups to qualify for future support under the programme. “This is not just a handout. It is a strategic investment in our people. We want to see more women, youth, and persons with disabilities driving change and building sustainable incomes,” he added.
The Social Protection Grants Programme is part of the governor’s social and economic transformation blueprint, which prioritises equity, empowerment and opportunity for all residents of Kakamega.
Residents have welcomed the announcement, with many expressing hope that the funds will ease economic pressure and help jump-start community businesses.
