West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin yesterday handed over Sh2.8 million from Ultra Poor Graduation (UPG) project to 456 business groups supported by Village Enterprise organization aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth in the region.
The funds, part of the Ultra Poor Graduation (UPG) project, are aimed at empowering vulnerable communities and are co-implemented by the county government.
The event took place at Mtello Hall in Kapenguria town and was attended by notable leaders including County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif and Deputy Governor Robert Komolle.
A majority of the beneficiaries are women from Siyoi, Endough, and Weiwei wards, reflecting the project’s focus on empowering women entrepreneurs.
According to the Regional Director of Village Enterprise in West Pokot Nathaniel Maiyo, the funds are intended to uplift the lives of group members and their families out of extreme poverty.
Governor Kachapin emphasized that the grants are not just financial support but a crucial step towards transforming the lives of the most vulnerable in the community.
The governor urged the beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely to sustain their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
CC Khalif commended Village Enterprise for their efforts in supporting vulnerable populations, noting that their initiatives complement government efforts to create sustainable livelihoods through enterprise development.
