Governor Mutahi assents Climate, Forest and Conservation Bill

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga assented to two key Bills passed by the area County Assembly to manage two sectors environment.

Kahiga approved the Nyeri County Climate Change Bill 2021 and the Nyeri County Forest Management and Conservation Bill 2021 during a brief ceremony held outside his office in Nyeri town.

Speaking to the press after assenting to the Bills, Kahiga said the Climate Change Bill creates a fund to mitigate the impacts of climate change in the region.

The County boss noted that climate change is a global challenge that has had negative effects on the environment affecting the local agricultural economy.

Kahiga said the Bill will also allow the creation of climate change committees from the ward to the county level, tasked with managing climate aspects, adding that it will also give legal mandate to the County to source for funds to manage climate change.

On the Forest Bill, the Governor said it will enable the devolved unit to manage the resources for the benefit of the residents.

He added that it creates avenues for the County government to generate funds for afforestation and other related activities.

Speaking during the same function, Nyeri County Assembly Speaker, John Kagucia, said that the Bills were generated by the Executive and the Assembly fast tracked their approval.
