Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has launched the construction of the Sh70 million Cheera Modern Market and directed the safe relocation of traders to a designated temporary site to allow the project to begin without disruption.
Speaking at Cheera Market in Mugwe Ward during the relocation and site handover event, Governor Njuki hailed the strong partnership between the National and County Governments in delivering market infrastructure meant to boost local trade and improve livelihoods.
He commended the Kenya Kwanza administration for supporting the project, noting that once completed, the management and operations of the market will fall under the Government.
“There is no meaningful development without active involvement of its greatest stakeholders who are the people.

“We have commissioned an alternative site where traders will operate as we construct a permanent modern market anchored on community participation,” said Governor Njuki.
The County Chief further announced that no bar will be allowed to operate within the new market, saying the facility is intended to enhance organized trade and promote a productive business environment.
Regional Director for the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Patrick Mwangi, said the modern market will be built at a cost of Sh70 million and will take nine months to complete.
Mwangi added that the contractor has committed to deliver the project within the agreed timeframe.
He emphasized that residents of Tharaka Nithi should be given priority in job opportunities during construction, and local suppliers should also be considered in supplying construction materials.
Once completed, the Cheera modern market is expected to provide a safer, more organized trading space and stimulate economic growth in Mugwe Ward and the wider Tharaka Nithi County.
