Governor Ottichillo leads residents in clean-up exercise

Vihiga county governor Dr. Wilber Ottichillo, in partnership with Equity Bank, has led residents in a countywide clean-up exercise to mark Mazingira Day.

The event aimed at promoting cleanliness, waste management, and environmental responsibility across the county.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr Ottichillo urged residents to embrace cleanliness as a personal duty, noting that maintaining a healthy environment was key to preventing diseases.

“We must all ensure our surroundings are clean. If we fail to do that, we will expose ourselves to many diseases. Garbage is no longer waste, it can be turned into wealth through recycling. For instance, plastic waste can be recycled, while vegetable remains can be used to make fertiliser,” he said.

Equity Bank Vihiga Branch Manager Jane Ogutu commended the partnership, saying the initiative also marked the conclusion of the bank’s International Customer Week celebrations.

“We are happy to join the community in this noble cause as we celebrate our customers and promote a cleaner environment,” Ogutu said.

The  county Ag. County Commissioner Florence Sitawa applauded the joint effort, calling on residents to take collective responsibility in maintaining cleanliness rather than relying solely on the county government.

“Environmental conservation begins with each one of us. Let’s not wait solely for the government; cleanliness is our shared responsibility,” said Sitawa.

The clean-up exercise brought together county officials, Equity Bank staff, and members of the public, all united in the effort to make the county cleaner, healthier, and greener.
