Vihiga County Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring residents access a constant supply of clean and safe water.
To mark this year’s World Wetlands Day, Governor Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo commissioned the Ebukholi Community Water Project in North East Bunyore Ward, Emuhaya Sub County.

The project is expected to benefit more than 180 households and public institutions by improving access to safe and reliable water.
The commissioning ceremony was held at Esibuye Comprehensive School grounds in Emuhaya Sub County, where learners, teachers, and community members gathered to witness the milestone.
Speaking during the event, Governor Ottichilo underscored the importance of rehabilitating and conserving wetlands for sustainable development.
He noted that wetlands play a critical role in supporting water resources, biodiversity, and livelihoods.
“Our administration has mapped all riparian zones and will continue working closely with stakeholders to raise public awareness on the importance of wetlands for both people and nature. We are also committed to promoting actions that support their conservation,” said Dr. Ottichilo.
The governor further revealed that the county, through the Directorate of Climate Change and the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Programme (FLLoCA), has implemented more than 20 water projects across the county.
He added that the initiatives were part of the county’s broader strategy to enhance climate resilience, improve public health, and support sustainable livelihoods.
Schools in the area welcomed the initiative, saying the project would improve hygiene standards, reduce water shortages, and create a better learning environment for learners.
Residents also lauded the project, saying it would reduce the time spent fetching water and improve sanitation within the community.
