Illicit drugs worth Sh21 million destroyed in Busia

Police in Busia, working in collaboration with judiciary staff, have destroyed a consignment of bhang and heroin valued at over Sh21 million.

The narcotics are part of the exhibits presented in court that were intercepted at the Suo roadblock along Kisumu-Busia Road in 2023.

Speaking to the press before destroying the exhibits at Alupe Sub County Hospital incinerator in Teso South Sub County on Wednesday, Busia County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Wesley Langat said that it was part of a consignment destined for Mombasa from the neighboring country of Uganda in 2023.

“Two Kenyan suspects were arrested in connection with the incidents,” he said, adding that security officers are on alert to crack down on drug peddlers.

Busia Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti stated that the two cases were processed and concluded in court and the convicts sentenced to 50 years imprisonment.

Nyaloti added that the convicts were found in possession of 12.5 kilograms of heroin worth Sh11.8 million alongside bhang worth more than Sh10 million.

Busia County representative of the Director of Public Prosecution Loice Murunga warned local residents against engaging in drug trafficking, adding that the vices attract hefty fines.
