A Meru-based community group commonly known as Imenti Development Forum (IDF) is making significant strides in empowering the youth at their early ages in matters Information Communication Technology (ICT).
Under its Chairman, Mr Mutuma Kigatira, the forum has embarked on a mission to bridge the digital divide by establishing ICT resource centers in various localities within Imenti region where young people visit to learn more about computers to prepare them for the existing world of computing and technology.
“These centers, equipped with computers and internet access, are designed to provide young people within our region with the skills and tools necessary to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.
From basic computer literacy to advanced digital training, the initiative aims to open up new opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship, and include new farming trends,” said Mr Kigatira.
He spoke during the commissioning of the Kathiranga and Ithimbari ICT centres in Imenti Central and Imenti South respectively.
The group is also set to open two more centres in Kithima (Buuri) and Ngiine in Imenti North.
He emphasized that this initiative is not only about technology but also about giving back to the community and creating a brighter future for the next generation.
“We believe in the potential of our youth. By providing them with access to ICT resources, we’re not just offering skills, we’re creating pathways to success. We are also giving back in appreciation of what the community made us to be today,” said Mr Kigatira.
Meru County’s Executive Member in charge of Sports, Youth, Gender, and Social Development Mr Elias Murega who is also a member of the group said the forum’s efforts also serve as a complement to ongoing government programs aimed at youth empowerment and digital coverage.
“By working hand in hand with public initiatives, the Imenti Development Forum is reinforcing the region’s development agenda and fostering a culture of community-driven progress. As a government we will fully support them in empowering our young people who hold the future of this County,” said Mr Murega.
Area residents have welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm, with many young people already taking advantage of the centers to enhance their skills and explore new opportunities.
As the Imenti Development Forum continues to expand its reach, the impact of its work is expected to resonate for years to come.
Mr Mugambi Imanyara, a member of the forum urged young people to take advantage of the resource centers to carry out activities that will benefit them in future.
“This is a golden opportunity for this community since the resource center is accessible to everyone including learners doing their research as well as farmers and traders who want to explore new markets,” said Mr Imanyara.
The forum is made of professionals from various sectors whereby they bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and a shared commitment to community development, with their initiatives driven by the belief that sustainable progress begins with empowered youth.
In addition to their development efforts, the forum has issued a call to action to local political leaders and the Meru County Government to put aside their political differences and work in unity for the betterment of the region.
