Ingonga says there is no political interference at ODPP

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has stated that his office faces no challenges of political interference.

Ingonga, who spoke during a courtesy call to Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua at his office, said that the Constitution is clear that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) does not get any direction or authority from the politicians.

He explained that political interference does not arise in prosecution, noting that any citizen is subject to the rules and laws for their deeds.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is established by the Constitution, where the ODPP is responsible for instituting and undertaking the prosecution of criminal matters, ensuring accountability and promoting human rights.

Ingonga, who also visited Migori governor Ochillo Ayako at his residence before going to the judiciary offices in Migori, explained that the tour aims to promote awareness and understanding of the justice system.

The ODPP Director, who also met with officials from the judiciary, county government, police, and local administrators, said that the stakeholders’ engagement aims to improve service delivery and foster a stronger relationship between the ODPP and the communities they serve, as well as address any challenges that the ODPP office has been facing.

The official also addressed the issue of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice that is prevalent in Kuria sub counties, and which mainly happens during this December holiday season.

The ODPP Director explained that FGM is an issue of national concern, adding that his office will deal with FGM cases firmly when such cases are brought to the office’s attention.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) is currently touring the Nyanza region to engage with stakeholders and assess the progress of the local justice system.

So far, the Director has visited the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Nyamira, Kisii and Migori and is satisfied with the progress made by his office.

“This is our fifth county, and we have not encountered any major issues concerning the stakeholders and the office of the ODPP. Our goal is to connect with the Migori people and understand how they are working and identify areas where we can improve,” he concluded.
