Jirongo buried amid calls for thorough probe of accident

Former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, was laid to rest on Tuesday at his Lumakanda home in Kakamega County, during a funeral service attended by family members, friends and leaders from across the country.

The service was held at Lumakanda Township Comprehensive School grounds, where speakers paid tribute to the former Legislator, describing him as an experienced politician, businessman and community leader who played a role in regional and national politics.

Several leaders called for further probes into the circumstances surrounding his death, urging investigative agencies to ensure the process is thorough and transparent.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who attended the burial, eulogised Jirongo as a principled leader who contributed to the country’s democratic journey and public life.

Former Vihiga Senator George Khaniri recalled his long association with the late Jirongo, while other leaders, including Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, Busia Governor Paul Otuoma, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, echoed calls for comprehensive investigations.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula described him as a committed leader who valued unity and friendship. He urged investigating agencies to conduct their work conclusively and called on the Western region to honour Jirongo’s legacy by remaining united.

Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, who delivered President William Ruto’s condolence message, described Jirongo as a leader who supported many people across the country and emphasised the need for clarity on the circumstances of his death.

Other leaders present who echoed calls for transparent investigations into the controversy around the death include People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who all paid tribute to the late former legislator.

Mr. Jirongo, aged 64, died on December 13 after his vehicle was involved in a road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway in the Karai area of Naivasha.
