Five mutilated women hospitalised in Bomet

Five women from Bomet County are receiving treatment at Longisa Referral Hospital after being mutilated while undergoing the outlawed Female Genital Mutilation.

The women, who are between the ages of 25 and 35 come from Cheboin location, Bomet East, and are said to have been arrested by the police after tip off from Nyumba kumi members.

According to area Chief Alfred Orwasa, the 80-year-old perpetrator of the crime Elizabeth Baliach was also arrested while a knife and other assorted items used in the practice recovered.

Orwasa said two other women who are Baliach’s accomplices were on the run and that they would soon be nabbed as well.

Orwasa told KNA that the FGM was still a problem in the area despite efforts by The President to completely rid the country of the vice by 2022.

While the offense attracts a fine of up to Sh 200 000, the suspects are expected to be arraigned in court Monday.
