Jobless youths in Nandi have been asked not to despair but instead engage in activities that are beneficial to them and the entire society.
The Founder HOKIL Foundation Zaccius Rop, while speaking in Ndalat Gaa Girls School, said the youths who are educated but jobless in Nandi could lead better and fulfilling lives if they directed their energies to doable and productive activities.
He said educated youths were needed in their communities where they could use the knowledge they acquired in schools to improve farming practices or use tech in a commercially driven world.
“My appeal to them is that let them not be hopeless but hopeful for a better tomorrow. They shouldn’t wait for white collar jobs; they can farm, volunteer to work at the church or schools,” Rop told the press after attending the form four candidates’ prayer meeting at the school.
“I know in Nandi, our land is fertile. They can do some farming. They can help their parents who are farmers who have dairy livestock and improve the production. They are even more educated than the parents,” he insisted.
Meanwhile Rop who is Kenyan doctor based in the US pleaded with the teachers handling form four candidates in Nandi and Kenya at large not to introduce new material to the candidates this last term to their national exams.
“Some will be anxious, some will be depressed if too much pressure is exerted but they should be given enough time to rest, sleep and guided on how they can study on their own,” Rop advised.
He asked candidates to interact freely with their teachers so that they share the challenges they are experiencing as they wait for their exams.
Rop further asked parents to provide a good studying environment for their children who are candidates during this short holiday season.
The School Principal Susan Too said the 270 candidates were well prepared since the syllabus was completed early this year.
“We are targeting a mean score of 6.5 and with thorough preparations we have put by finishing syllabus early enough, we can surpass this target,” Too promised.
She said the school was ready to receive Grade 9 with three pathways as the country embraces Competence Based Education.
HOKIL Foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organisation based in Nandi County. The organisation invests in education, mentorship, healthcare and poverty reduction.
