The Kajiado North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Yusuf Mohamed presided over a tree planting exercise at the Sub-County Headquarters.
The initiative which involved public servants including political leaders is in line with the Presidential directive on the National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign targeting the planting of 15 billion trees by the year 2032.
The exercise aims to further mitigate the effects of climate change, enhance environmental conservation, and build community resilience against climate-related challenges and adverse weather patterns.
Speaking during the exercise the DCC challenged the chiefs and officers to be in the lead and mobilize those who have space to engage in the exercise especially now that the rains have started.
“As NGAO, we will be in the frontline in planting trees. I have personal around 1000 seedlings and also in partnership with the Kenya Forest services, we have trees for those who require”, Yusuf added.
Samuel Muchiri the Kajiado North Sub County Administrator said the areas that have been planted trees will be fenced and the environmental champions in the region bee engaged to ensure that the trees are taken care of.
Today’s exercise and program is expected to be cascaded to lower levels of the National Government Administration to ensure wider community participation and sustained environmental conservation efforts.
Kajiado North is actively combating climate change and increasing its 10.94 per cent tree cover to meet the national goals. The target areas include community areas and even schools.
