The government, through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, has continued to implement the Affordable Housing Programme across the country, with more than 250,000 housing units already constructed.
In Murang’a County, residents of Kandara are set to benefit from a new housing project expected to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities.
Speaking during a public participation forum with stakeholders on the Kandara Affordable Housing Project, Lands, Housing and Urban Development Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome said the initiative has significantly transformed livelihoods in areas where it has been implemented.

“These projects have contributed to economic growth in various regions and improved the livelihoods of wananchi through job creation and business opportunities,” she said.
Ms Wahome added that the government remains committed to rolling out similar projects across the country as part of efforts to enhance access to decent and affordable housing.
“We will continue implementing these projects as they play a key role in economic development and improving the quality of life for our citizens,” she noted.
The Kandara project, expected to be completed within 18 months, will see the construction of 730 housing units.
The CS reiterated that the government’s commitment to complete the construction of 500,000 affordable housing units by December 2026 is well on course.
“Significant progress has already been made as more than 250,000 affordable housing units have so far been completed in various parts of the country,” she said
Kandara residents are also expected to benefit from casual employment opportunities, while the local economy is also expected to grow during the construction phase.
Ithiru Ward MCA Kibe Wasary welcomed the project, noting that it will open up the area for development. “This project will create jobs for our people and open up business opportunities within Kandara. Other benefits will follow this construction,” he said.
Nominated MCA Peter Mbogo also lauded the initiative, urging residents to support its implementation. “We encourage residents to embrace this project as it will bring development and improve living standards in this area,” he said.
On her part, Kandara Deputy County Commissioner Metrine Wafula called on residents to cooperate with the government to ensure timely completion of the project.
“We urge residents to work closely with the government and contractors to ensure this project is completed within the set timelines,” she said.
Ms Wafula also urged the locals to take advantage of the construction phase to earn a livelihood. “Ladies, do not be left behind; be ready to work and change your lives while earning a livelihood. This project is expected to become a major driver of growth in the area, offering affordable housing solutions while stimulating local economic development, so let us support it,” she urged.
A resident, Jacinta Wangari, also expressed optimism about the project. “This project gives us hope, not only for affordable housing but also for jobs and better business opportunities,” she said, adding, “The housing projects have created jobs for many young people and improved living standards in other regions and now it’s our turn to reap benefits from this project.”
