Kenya bolsters security, ahead of CHAN fixtures

The government has bolstered security as Kenya prepares to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) beginning Sunday.

Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Kajiado County, Interior Cabinet Secretary Onesmus Murkomen said that the Ministry has implemented a wide range of safety protocols to ensure adequate protection for both locals and international visitors.

“We have installed modern CCTV cameras in order to do proper surveillance, increased police patrols, deployed tourist police officers and strengthened hotel security among other security measures to ensure the safety of the players, fans and officials during the tournament,” he said.

“We have also activated emergency response services such as ambulances for any emergency situation,” added Murkomen.

The CS pointed out that Nyayo stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani the main hosting venues for the tournament are ready for the event.

To avoid stampedes, Murkomen revealed that they had introduced an online ticketing system, while encouraging fans to go to the stadiums early to avoid long queues.

“We will also be conducting thorough checks at the entry points to ensure no individuals will enter the stadiums with weapons or other restricted items,” he said.

The CS remarked that this was a historic moment for Kenya while hosting CHAN, as it will help in preparation for Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

He also revealed that to facilitate smooth travel arrangements, special desks for football fans, who want to travel across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have been placed at the Immigration points.

Murkomen further revealed that they had also introduced a special travel pass to speed up entry and exit for fans, who want to enjoy all the matches in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Most regional travellers will therefore not need a visa and some Caribbean visitors will also be facilitated.

The CS encouraged Kenyans to be hospitable and attend the matches beginning Sunday, and support our national team, Harambee Stars to shine all the way to the finals.
