Kenyans encouraged to take part in paying taxes

Out of the 21 million KRA pins out there, only 10.5 million pin users filed their returns by June 30, 2025 and from the 10.5 million, nearly six million filed nil returns.

This was revealed by Kenya Revenue Authority Chairman Ndiritu Muriithi in a media briefing in Nanyuki, Laikipia County Wednesday.

While noting that only four million Kenyans were paying taxes, Muriithi urged all eligible citizens to pay tax to boost development in the country and enhance service delivery.

“The effort KRA is making is on tax base expansion. There are 21 million pin numbers and out of that, 10.5 million filed returns for the 2024/2025 financial year. From the 10.5 million, nearly six million filed nil returns. Only four million are active taxpayers,” said Muriithi.

Muriithi, who is the former Laikipia governor, pointed out that KRA was putting up a tax base expansion mechanism through leveraging on technology aimed to encourage non-tax payers to start paying. He highlighted that KRA was further making tax paying seamless.

“We want to rely more on technology to make payment of taxes seamless for Kenyans to meet their tax obligations and make it easy for everyone,” said the KRA boss.

In the financial year 2024 /2025, KRA collected Sh2.571 trillion exceeding the revenue target of Sh2.555 trillion by 6.8 percent.
