Kenyans urged to verify information, support govt projects

Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia has urged Kenyans to exercise patriotism and be confident with the government to deliver on its mandate.

Speaking at Masinde Muliro University in Kakamega County, Macharia noted that the government is committed to ensuring that it offers development, urging residents to be loyal and exercise restraint against falsehoods.

He urged residents to always seek to understand the source of information they consume and know if it’s credible or not in order not to be misled by misinformation, disinformation and outright propaganda.

“Have you ever taken time to know if a source of information is credible? When you feed into misinformation and disinformation, you will start to dislike your government just because you listened to information but you don’t know its source,” he added.

He gave an example that even before the rollout of the Kazi Mtaani programme, some individuals began spreading fake information and falsehoods meant to mislead Kenyans.

The Regional Commissioner was speaking during a stakeholder and citizen engagement forum spearheaded by the State Department for National Government Administration to enable the citizenry to understand what the government is doing and track the progress of projects.

“What we are doing today is to involve you so that we are moving together in the same direction as the Mwananchi and us as a government because this is our government and this is our country,” he said.

He noted that it is very difficult to be patriotic to the country and the government unless Kenyans are loyal, noting that at any given time, a country must have leadership in place.

“You cannot be patriotic unless you are loyal to that government, because whether you like it or not, we must have leadership in this country and that leadership must be respected,” he added.

Macharia assured residents that the government is implementing projects across the country without favouritism and marginalisation.
