Access to quality eye care is essential for education, productivity, and dignity yet preventable vision problems continue to affect many families.
That is why a consultative meeting on the Kiambu Eye Health Policy and the Kiambu Eye Health Strategic plan 2026-2031 marks a significant step toward safeguarding the sight and wellbeing of residents across Kiambu County.
The consultative session was convened by the Health Services Committee led by Muhunjia Kamau, bringing together policymakers and implementers to align priorities before the policy’s rollout.
The committee engaged the county Executive Department of Health Services in detailed discussions on the intent of the eye health policy, its strategic direction and the expected outcomes once implemented.
Leading the health delegations was Dr Elius Maina, county Executive Committee member for health accompanied by key programme partners. During the meeting, members reviewed the draft Kiambu County Comprehensive Eye Health policy and the accompanying strategic plan, assessing the policy framework’s practicality and readiness for implementation.
The proposed policy aims to expand preventive, curative, and rehabilitative eye care services, particularly for vulnerable populations. By enhancing infrastructure, strengthening partnerships, and improving service delivery systems, the strategy seeks to reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment across the county.
Speaking during the session, committee members emphasised that effective eye health services are fundamental to community development, noting that improved vision directly supports education outcomes, workforce productivity, and overall quality of life.
With stakeholder input now incorporated, the county moves closer to implementing a comprehensive framework designed to ensure that no resident is left behind in accessing essential eye care, bringing Kiambu into sharper focus for a healthier future.
