Kiambu county officials engage boda boda leaders in bid to improve sector operations

In efforts to safeguard the welfare and improve working conditions for boda boda operators in Kiambu County, the Directorate of Social Services led key county officials to a consultative meeting with boda boda representatives from the county.

The meeting brought together officials from multiple county departments, including Finance, Trade, Enforcement, Liaison, and Ward Administrators.

Others present were Deputy Director of Trade and Markets Winnie Wairimu and County Enforcement Officer Mark Meja.

The deliberations of the meeting underscored the county government’s commitment to addressing the sector’s pressing challenges in a coordinated and inclusive manner.

Among the primary objectives of the meeting was to explore strategies for creating a more organized, secure, and economically viable operating environment for boda boda riders, while also improving revenue collection systems for the municipality.

Other key issues discussed included regulatory compliance, safety concerns, designated operating zones, improved communication, and the development of structured frameworks for engagement between boda boda associations and county officials.

Mark Owino, Chairman of the Bodaboda Society in Kiambu, welcomed the dialogue initiative, emphasizing the importance of regular engagement.

“Our members are willing to comply with regulations, but we need clarity, consistency, and support from the county. This kind of collaboration helps build trust,” Owino said.

Deputy Director Wairimu highlighted the need for formalized market structures and improved integration of boda boda services into the broader transport and trade ecosystem.

“The bodaboda sector plays a vital role in our local economy. Organizing it better benefits everyone: riders, passengers, and businesses,” she noted.

Her sentiments were echoed by Meja, who stressed the economic potential of a well-regulated sector. “With proper investment and coordination, this sector can be a driver of youth employment and local revenue growth,” Meja said.

In addition, the Finance Officer proposed the adoption of digital platforms to enhance revenue collection, reduce leakages, and ensure transparency.

County officials and bodaboda leaders agreed to uphold a shared commitment to structured communication, fair enforcement of regulations, and collaborative planning.

“This is a step forward,” Owino remarked. “We’re optimistic that with continued cooperation, the boda boda industry in Kiambu can be safer, more organized, and more respected.”

The initiative to involve boda boda operators in matters concerning their business and welfare signals a goodwill and enhanced public-private cooperation in the informal transport sector.
